One thing I find really bizarre and unsettling is this continuous effort everyone seems to make to have a perfect read on everyone else, as if everything is that simple. It’s not? It’s not. It isn’t.
I keep seeing all these pieces floating around the internet about how you should date a guy or girl who reads or writes or does not write or is a nerd or is Judd Nelson before the cruel sands of time turned him into Anton LaVey
Or plays music or was raised in a certain type of home, and while the sincerity of those posts isn’t always immediately clear, the effect it has on people who eat it up as inarguable truth renders whether or not the author was being serious as kind of irrelevant.
The truth of the matter of is something closer to this: some people who do a thing are a certain way and others who do that same thing might be completely different, and that can be for reasons completely unrelated to that thing they do. It’s kind of scary if you think about it - people are complicated and weird and inconsistent, and we try to rationalize that by thinking we can just figure someone out like a math problem or a rubiks cube, which is a type of math problem if you really think about it, so yeah, I’ll stick with math problem. People aren’t math problems for you to solve. You can’t perceive everything about them just from looking or finding out one or two things!
This is the case for nearly everything that makes up the frankenstien’s monster of our identities - our interests, our sexual orientation, our sexual discretion, our gender identity, our ethnicity, our fashion sense, our intrinsic sense of self… people are closer to really sketchy paella and you kind of just have to dive right in to figure out what the hell the chef decided was a good idea to throw in there.
Thinking you have a read on someone because of something you believe is evidence of how they are at their very core is in no way foolproof, and sometimes, it’s not a very nice thing to do! Your best bet is to just form connections. Give people a chance. Try your very darndest to not be jaded. It’s tough, I know.
Date whoever makes you happy. Or don’t date them. Maybe you don’t like dating. Keep people in your life who are good for you and who you have the ability to be good for. You’re complicated. Probably. So is everyone else. Probably.
Have an ostensibly happy lizard

I was not expecting this and, as a result, almost choked to death on my water.
