there are a lot of people saying “i thought the youtube community was a safe place but i guess not” and that makes me so sad…
as grumpy and bitter as i am i still have a huge soft spot for this community. it’s 99% full of kind, smart, funny, talented, generally awesome people. however, this is a classic case of one bad apple spoiling the bunch.
girls (and i’m saying girls because let’s face facts, that’s what’s relevant right now), please please please have the courage and self-respect to stop talking to someone if they ask you to do something you’re not 100% comfortable with. i mean i’m not saying “YOU HAVE NO RESPECT FOR YOURSELF IF YOU SHOW BOYS YOUR BOOBS” because that’s not true at all, just…don’t let people pressure you into anything. really evaluate how much you trust someone. if it comes down to it, block all lines of communication with the person, cut all ties, and walk away.
this is an isolated incident in an otherwise stellar community. i hope this hasn’t negatively affected anyone’s chances of being able to participate in the community or go to meetups or vidcon. my involvement with youtube and the surrounding community has led to some of the most awesome experiences and the best friends of my life. making that first video is the best decision i have ever made. if there’s anyone out there whose parents are really put off by this whole situation, let me know. i’ll vouch for us.
It is really depressing. Especially since I always liked his work and his general presence on YouTube.
But it is still a wonderful community and I’m happy to be a small part of it.
